womanAccording to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are more than 6 million women in the U.S. that are struggling with infertility. The effects of infertility are quite far reaching, and can be devastating on a physical, psychological, and emotional level, and can put profound financial stress on families, as well. There are a variety of causes that contribute to infertility, including hormonal imbalances, damage to fallopian tubes, and nervous system dysfunction and imbalance…to name just a few.

In a multitude of cases, poor nutrition and lifestyle habits – combined with increased stress and improper nervous system function – can be factors in ongoing infertility issues. Unfortunately, there are quite a few “conventional” physicians out there who are slow (at best) to appreciate the importance of having a properly functioning nervous system in relation to fertility. Now, it’s important to note that your reproductive organs are not under your conscious control but, instead, are directed by your autonomic nervous system (ANS) which is a branch of the peripheral nervous system (PNS).  The PNS is ultimately controlled by the central nervous system (CNS) which is made up of your brain & spinal cord.

Now, before we go any further, we should state that chiropractic care is not a cure for infertility. However, it is something that has the ability – by addressing nervous system function, stress management, healthy lifestyle habits, and proper nutrition – to restore and/or optimize your body’s ability to function at its maximum capacity. Often times, infertility problems are solved as a result.

So, how exactly can chiropractic care help with infertility? Well, in order for conception to occur, an egg needs to be released from the ovary and travel through the fallopian tube so that it can be fertilized via sperm. The movement of the egg is, ultimately, due to “peristalsis”, which is rhythmical, smooth muscle action, and is controlled by signals relayed between your central nervous system and your peripheral nervous system. Spinal restrictions – or misalignments (often caused by stress, car accidents, etc) – in the spine can interfere with that process and interrupt communication between the central nervous system and your reproductive organs. This type of improper nerve flow can cause eggs the inability to reach their final destination which, in turn, hinders fertility.

Chiropractors not only specialize in locating these subluxations, but also in removing the nerve interference with specific adjustments which permit the body to heal & function like it was designed to. When this is combined with proper nutrition, stress management, and emotional support – all things that chiropractors are trained in providing, fertility is often restored.
