Chiropractic Treatment of Ear Infections in Children – The Gentler Option

nature-body-earEar infections (otitis media) are miserable no matter what age you are but, for whatever reason, they always seem to hit the little ones harder. They excruciatingly painful and, when one strikes, it often means that a long, tearful night lies in the near future. In fact, ear infections are the most common illness affecting babies and young children AND are the number one reason for visits to the pediatrician. With roughly 10 million ear infections occurring each year, this means that a whopping 35% percent of all pediatric visits are due to the dreaded ear infection.

The standard treatment for ear infections is antibiotics, which are powerful drugs that have the ability to be quite effective against otitis media…if the infection is, in fact, bacterial (antibiotics do nothing for viral infections). However, studies are emerging every day that show that, when it comes to ear infections, the body’s own immune system is often just as effective as antibiotics – this is extremely important since, for a multitude of children, ear infections can become a chronic problem, leading to substantial antibiotic use (which can result in antibiotic resistance when used repeatedly) and, for some, surgery.

Fortunately, though, there is another option, which means that parents won’t have to go through the “will it work or won’t it” frustration that often accompanies antibiotics OR have to decide on taking those drastic steps towards surgery. This “other option” is chiropractic care, which has been proven – time and again – to be extremely effective (with an 80% efficacy rate) in the fight against otitis media.

Chiropractic treatment of ear infections in children tends to revolve around mobilizing the drainage of the ear via manipulation of the back of the head and the first vertebra.  By adjusting these areas, the middle ear is allowed to drain – depending upon how chronic the pain and buildup has been, it may take more than one adjustment (sometimes daily or every other day) to completely relieve the fluid buildup. Once the child has been able to successfully ward off one bout of fluid, their bodies will start to build up antibodies that can help ward off future infections.

Chiropractic adjustments are much, much, MUCH gentler on both the body and the immune system than are antibiotics or, as a last resort, surgery. And, unless there are other environmental factors – such as smoking in the home – children tend to respond extremely well to these adjustments. In fact, after seeing such amazing results, many pediatricians are starting to get on board with this form of treatment as well.

Chiropractic treatment of ear infections – be it in children or adults – is both safe and effective. When and how often should I go see a chiropractor?

DSC_0072adjHow often should I get treated by a chiropractor?  When should I go see a chiropractor?  These are a few of many questions that we see and get asked in our practice when we are doing events in the area.  Any person can come see a chiropractor and you do not need a referral from your primary doctor most of the time.  However,  it may not always be a bad idea to speak with your primary care doctor so you are both on the same page. The sad part is that many people may not go to a chiropractor, due to several reasons but that may include: a bad experience, they did not get any relief, many have heard horror stories about chiropractors, or they have no clue what a chiropractor does!  That seems very sad in my opinion because there are many things we can help and things we can do to help you live a healthier lifestyle.

So when should you go to a chiropractor?  Well, a good chiropractor will not only help you decrease your pain but should also help you perform your daily activities better and pain free.  Most chiropractors will adjust you, based on what they find when looking at your spine and joints. As a professional, we look for dysfunctional movement in your spine where it isn’t moving correctly and correct that region.  You may not be adjusted every single time or your whole body for that matter, but it should be based on what they find.  This being said, you may have pain in this area or you may not, but we are looking for the main cause of your pain.  Everyone should get your spine checked even if you do not have pain because we can see and find things that may cause more pain or injury later on.  The other great thing is that chiropractors can do more than adjusting your joints.

What is this great you might ask?  Well, what does those bones protect and what moves your body? It’s your nervous system and muscles, of course.  So we can help with certain conditions that affect your nerves and muscles as well.  In our clinic,  we work on soft tissue/muscle,  perform therapeutic exercises, give nutritional advice, and use acupuncture for pain control.  We use all the tools in our basket to promote overall health and wellness.   All of these tools help support the the main thing chiropractors do, which is manipulation.

How often should I go, you might ask? Well, that tends to vary with what you are being seen for and how much pain you may be in. When you first come into the office, we perform a thorough exam and try to give you a good assessment of what is going on with you. A treatment plan is then given to give you, the patient, an idea of what it takes to fix the problem and decrease your pain.  We recommend a treatment plan so that you know what is going on and it gives us a guideline for treatment. Treatment plans change with each situation and patient so someone could be seen 2x/week for 3 weeks, then 1x/week for 6 weeks, then 1x/month for 6 months for stage 3, while someone in extreme pain may be 3x/week for 2 weeks for stage 1, and so on forth for stage 2 and stage 3.  The main reason we talk about a treatment plan is so that we can get through the different stages of healing. Those stages as mentioned above are 3 stages: Acute or Pain stage, Recovery or Stabilization stage, and the Maintenance or Wellness stage.

Stage 1 is for acute conditions and when in pain so we want to get you out of pain as quickly and safely as possible.  Stage 2 is when we help stabilize the condition and focus on muscle and nervous system control.  This is the prime excellent time to work on exercises for rehabilitation, posture, and strengthening.  Stage 3 is for maintenance care to maintain proper health.  This is where insurance stops paying but it is up to the patient if they would like to continue for maintenance care.    The thing with treatment plans is that some people heal quicker than others so the treatment plan can and should change as you go.  It all depends on the person and if they follow recommendations of care.  There are always people who want the quick fix and we can accommodate that but everyone is better off correcting the cause of pain and fixing the problem.  People ask all the time if I can help with this and that and what we can do to help; we can give you advice to follow but until we see you in the office and have the time to properly diagnose it, we don’t know that best way to treat you and your condition.   I can’t correctly help a person that I have never seen before unless I have the time to examine your issue in depth. This is why you should come see a chiropractor to get evaluated and see if it is for you and your condition.  Following our recommendations for care to help you get better quicker and stay healthier is also a great way to get better and stay pain free.

Our chiropractors here at Fletcher Chiropractic in Lincoln, Nebraska have years of experience with multiple musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.  They are here to help and get you out of pain so give us a call today to set up an appointment.

Chiropractic Care of Infants and Children

_DSC6605Back-to-school mania is in full swing, which means shopping carts full of school supplies, new shoes and backpacks, as well as school and sports physicals. And, for lots of kids, that also means (continued) regular visits to the chiropractor.

As time goes by and chiropractic care becomes more mainstream, more adults are seeing the benefits of regular/routine visits to the chiropractor. It doesn’t take long for the benefits to become apparent, which is something they want for their children, too.

Why Do Kids Need Chiropractic Treatment?
Regardless of the size or age of the spine – be it big or little, young or old – if it’s creating issues with the nerves and what not, then the body isn’t able to perform at its best. That’s because the nervous system is the “master controller” within our body and, when that communication within the system gets damaged all sorts of problems can arise.

For infants and children, this can manifest itself in the form of colic, irritability, suckling and breastfeeding issues, digestion issues, poor sleep, developmental delays, behavior issues and problems, difficulty concentrating, low energy levels, headaches…honestly, the list goes on and on.

Chiropractic care works to ensure that the nervous system has the best possible chance of being able to work effectively and efficiently. In fact, chiropractors spend years studying the nervous system and learning how to detect and correct these types of communication problems within the body.

How Can Kids Possibly Get Nerve Irritation?
The simplest answer is that ANYONE can get nerve irritation. It’s a part of normal, daily life and is a result of physical, chemical and emotional stressors, such as poor posture and nutritional choices, exposure to toxins, and anxiety. In fact, there’s research showing that this nerve irritation can occur while we’re still in the womb or via complicated labors, etc.

When it comes to treating infants and children, chiropractors utilize special techniques that allow them to gently and carefully correct any affected areas.

What are the Most Common Reasons That Infants and Children Receive Chiropractic Care?
Some of the top reasons that infants and children receive chiropractic care are:

1.       To encourage good neural plasticity (brain and nerve development).
2.       To support their child’s overall health and wellbeing.
3.       To help strengthen their child’s immunity and potentially reduce the incidence of colds, ear-aches and general illness.
4.       To assist with colic and irritability.
5.       To help with asthma, breathing difficulties and allergies.
6.       To encourage good spinal posture.
7.       To help improve their child’s ability to concentrate.
8.       To assist with behavioral disorders.
9.       To help alleviate digestive problems.
10.    To assist with bed-wetting and sleep issues.

We know how important your children are to you – they’re important to us, too! That’s why the providers here at Fletcher Chiropractic in Lincoln, Nebraska take the utmost care in treating their little bodies. If you’re interested in having your child (or yourself!) evaluated, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Chiropractic can help your golf game.

golf-playingFore!  If you have heard that before, you are or have been on a golf course.  Golf is a great game of skill and a great way to get outside to enjoy the summer and fall.  But if you have pain while playing, you may be have a suffering golf score and swing. There is a reason why the golf greats like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Arnold Palmer have relied on chiropractic care.

Even young up and comers, Zach Johnson and Jordan Spieth, use chiropractic care and have throughout their careers and the PGA has chiropractors on staff: it is not always for aches and pains. When a avid golfer goes golfing, they put their body in many different positions and postures to generate torque to hit the golf ball.   Add on the repetition of swing the club and bending over continuously for some people at lease a 100 times a day, adjustments and chiropractic care can be beneficial even if you are not in pain.   They also increase your flexibility, improve posture and range of motion, and also reduce the risk of injury.

Evidence shows that golfers treated with chiropractic care and stretching/soft tissue therapy versus just stretching alone have an increased performance in their “full swing” performance (the average distance the golf ball was driven).  Chiropractic care can help prevent injuries along with helping to improve performance.  Most chiropractors can perform soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercise, and nutrition to help support the adjustment.  Not only does it help prevent injuries, but also it also helps reduce pain, increase flexibility, and it can also help with improving mobility while they do their daily activities.  This could include walking during golf, carrying your golf clubs, and swinging your golf clubs, which can be stressful to the body at times.  A good golf chiropractor should give you tips for helping at practice.

We think we are great golf chiropractors so here are some tips:

1.  Use clubs made for your body and gender. They make women’s and men’s clubs for a reason.  Make sure they are adequate for you and that they are the right size.  For instance, if you are using clubs for someone smaller than you, let’s say you are 6 foot tall and you are using someone’s clubs that are made for someone 5′ 6″,  then you are begging to get some back pain.

2. Stretch before you golf.  I know this is silly but you need to warm up and stretch beforehand, or otherwise you can hurt yourself if you just go out there and golf cold turkey. Injuries can occur over time

3.  Take Lessons.  Not only is it a fun game to learn and play but it makes it more enjoyable when you are doing really well.  Plus, you can make it a social event for you and go golfing with other couples or friends. The greats get coached, so why not you?

4.  Wear orthotics or supportive shoes for your arches.  It will help protect your feet from over-pronation and flat feet.  From a bio-mechanical stand point, when you have something wrong with your feet, it can affect your knees, hips, low back, etc.   It is like the foundation of your house,  if you have problem with the foundation, it will eventually affect the windows and walls.

5. Use a push cart. Ideally golfers should walk to get some exercise and not ride the golf cart all day.  If you carry your clubs, make sure to use two straps to evenly distribute the weight.  The best way is to use a pull cart.  I repeat, use a pull cart and make sure you have the correct athletic posture so you don’t make your muscles sore.

6. Practice with your non dominant hand. Every few holes take a practice swing with the non dominant hand.  For example,  if your right handed, you usually golf with your left hand/arm pointing toward the hole. Now do the opposite so your pointing your right hand/arm pointing toward the hole to keep your body evenly stressed/stretching.

7. Drink lots of fluids. Drink water if possible because we are 70% water.  Usually it is hot outside when you golf, so make sure to stay hydrated.  Sports drinks can be helpful if you get thirsty but try to limit them due to their increased sugar content.

8. Drop on a questionable shot.  If your ball is on a tree root and you decide to swing the golf club to hit the root, you are probably going to have a few stressed out joints & muscles.
