As we move into the spring months, there are a lot of temperature swings and rainy weather. During this time, we are at risk of getting sick with the flu and other illnesses. We think about getting ourselves healthier as spring and summer seasons approach.  With that in mind, let’s help our immune systems and try to get healthy by doing the following things.

Avoid consuming an excess of sugar. I know that’s hard to do this time of year as we are approaching different holidays like Easter and Memorial Day weekend, but consuming sugary foods and beverages can weaken the immune system.  It causes us to be more susceptible to any illness that may come our way and feeds inflammation. You are what you eat. If you start to feel the crud coming on, make sure to eat plenty of fresh, flavorful fruits and vegetables.  They will help detox the body and boost our nutrient intake.  Some supplementation like Black Elderberry supplement, that combines the flower and the fruit, can help support your immune system by working as a powerful antioxidant, antiviral, and mild anti-inflammatory. NAC or N-Acetyl Choline is another supplement that is beneficial for supporting your immune system.

Lastly, make sure to drink your fluids. Drink plenty of water. This helps flush out any bad toxins in the body and helps hydrate your body.  When you do get sick, drinking plenty of water will help thin mucus.  It helps your body stay moist in certain areas.  It also helps your digestive system eliminate properly.

Get your Vitamin D either from a supplement or from the sunshine. Vitamin D helps our immune system fight off illness.  Furthermore, it is important for your bone health and hormone health.  If you find yourself frequently fighting off sickness, you might consider having your vitamin D levels checked via a routine lab test. This is a simple blood test that can be ordered. Along with Vitamin D, sleep is also important. Getting six to eight hours of sleep each night is helpful to our bodies.   It recharges your body and allows our body to heal. While we are sleeping, it is when our bodies “run updates” per say like a computer.  Sleep gives our body time to work at healing bruises and injuries, fighting off sicknesses, and overall helping our bodies be rejuvenated to get energy for the next day.  Lack of sleep can cause a headache, brain fog or have trouble remembering things especially for prolonged periods.

Along with drinking water, you could try exercising to help you stay healthy. Exercise has many benefits to our overall health, but specifically it can help regulate your circadian rhythm which will help you sleep better, and as we mentioned earlier, sleep is the prime time for our body to heal and fight off sickness. Exercise is important too because it keeps your body moving.   Depending on what your goals are, like running a marathon, trying to gain muscle, or lose some pounds, exercise can be beneficial for your bone health, posture, muscles, and more.   Yoga and walking are good exercises too depending on your activity level.   Just make sure to practice proper techniques and form to avoid injuries.   Do not overdo it if you don’t exercise regularly.   Try exercises outdoors to get some vitamin D and stress relief.

The last and most important thing is to get a chiropractic adjustment.   Not only do we do chiropractic adjustments, but we try to give you exercises and stretches to do at home.  We also do different muscle therapies based on the patient.   An adjustment is a powerful treatment option that can provide relief for a patient in pain. When you get a chiropractic adjustment, it helps to basically tell your brain to pay more attention to the adjusted region by affecting the small muscles around the joints bones which in turn is sensory input for patient’s nervous system.  A chiropractic adjustment is helpful to get you back on the road to healthier movement and function.
